Kumi & Lionel Smith-Gordon moved to Breinton in Woking in 2005 and shortly after acquired a Yamaha grand piano. Normally used just for practice by Kumi and the children, we looked for better ways to make use of this beautiful instrument. While Woking is not far at all from the wealth of cultural events in London, many people don't have the opportunity or time to experience the skills of top flight musicians. We try to make our events intimate, informal and enjoyable, with the added attraction of time to enjoy some light snacks and wines during the interval with other Members. We established Breinton Recital Society in the spring of 2009 as a non-profit, member society formed “to advance, improve develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music”. We are recognised as a charity for tax purposes by HM Revenue and Customs (reference XT22744) which enables us to accept donations with Gift Aid. We hope that events such as our childrens’ matinee in November will help us advance these aims.
For our 2010/11 season, we have simplified our membership structure. Membership still runs on an annual basis from 1 August each year but the membership fee is included in ticket prices. Members will be invited to an Annual General Meeting each autumn where the Committee will report on activities.
The Society is a member of Making Music - the national federation of music societies. Making Music has advised us on the structure of our Society and on the wording of the Constitution and also supports our activities by providing insurance cover and a network to contact performers.
